چکیده

The effects of two lubricating oils on the trophic diversity of a nematode community of a Tunisian lagoon were investigated in a microcosm experiment. Sediment from a pristine site in Ghar El Melh lagoon (Western Mediterranean) was treated with mineral oil (Mobil 20 W-50), a synthetic lubricant (Mobil 0 W-40), the same two lubricants after use in a vehicle. Univariate analysis showed significant differences between univariate indices for trophic structure of nematode assemblages from undisturbed control and those from lubricant treatments. Trophic index (2) and the 1B/2A ratio decreased in all microcosms treated with mineral oil or synthetic lubricant. Results from multivariate analyses of the trophic group abundance data demonstrated that the responses of nematode were dependent on the type of lubricant (mineral or synthetic, "clean" or "used") used for the sediment contamination. Non-selective deposit feeders (1B), most abundant in control microcosm, were very much affected and their abundance decreased significantly in response to oil contamination. Selective deposit feeders (1A) increased in response to the two types of lubricants and seemed more resistant to lubricant contamination.

The effects of crude oil on marine microbial communities in sediments from the Persian Gulf and the Caspian Sea: A microcosm experiment

Changes in the microbial community in response to catastrophic oil spills in marine and fresh water environments have been well documented. Molecular methods provide tools for analyzing the entire bacterial community, covering also those bacteria that have not been cultured in the laboratory. In this study, four different microcosms were set up containing sediments collected from the Persian Gu...

Evaluation of the Biodegradation of Different Types of Lubricant Oils in Liquid Medium

The aim of this work was to study the biodegradation of different types of automotive lubricant oils adapted to the aqueous medium using a base inoculum and an aqueous inoculum. Four treatments were carried out in two consecutive and similar experiments: T1 (control); T2 (half-synthetic oil); T3 (mineral oil); T4 (used oil). The results showed the following decreasing order of CO2 production in...

Consumer Species Richness and Autotrophic Biomass

We tested whether standing autotrophic (unicellular algal) biomass is sensitive to variation in initial consumer (nondecomposer, heterotrophic protistan) diversity in experimental microbial microcosms. Our results showed a strong, negative relationship between autotrophic biomass and consumer species richness. Additional microcosm experiments showed that this relationship was due largely to the...

Effects of sheens associated with offshore oil and gas development on the feather microstructure of pelagic seabirds.

Operational discharges of hydrocarbons from maritime activities can have major cumulative impacts on marine ecosystems. Small quantities of oil (i.e., 10 ml) results in often lethally reduced thermoregulation in seabirds. Thin sheens of oil and drilling fluids form around offshore petroleum production structures from currently permissible operational discharges of hydrocarbons. Methodology was ...
